After the successful release in theaters, the Lord of the Rings trilogy was released on VHS and has since been converted to DVD and developed amongst numerous streaming platforms. The Lord of the Rings series is the fifth highest-grossing film of all time, collectively winning 17 Academy Awards. Because of its popularity, it did not take long before you could find it in high definition as Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray. Both of the digital formats, DVD and Blu-ray are packed with cast commentary, extra scenes, and plenty of behind the film footage.
Shortly after the huge success of the DVD and Blu-ray release for the trilogy, the Lord of the Rings extended version and the Lord of the Rings extended edition Blu ray were released. The extended edition is 30 minutes longer that the original and contains more violence while still being rated pg-13. Fans of the theatrical-version DVD now have a few longer, suspenseful scenes and four commentary tracks by Jackson and co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.
